I am from the USA, and having difficulties finding my German-Irish anscestors. I do not speak German, so I will do my best to use a translation service for the text of this post. If you can help me that would be great!
Background info: Michael SHANE b. 1673 emigrtaed to Berlin in, or around, 1695 at 22-years old. He met and married a German girl named Nancy? Dedric. This info was taken from an old family bible, so the dialect or language barriers probably hindered the proper spelling of the Dedric name.
They had (3) sons and (1) daughter. One son, my descendant, immigrated to the new world. He had to do so before 1765 when his son, Jacob SHANE, was born. It is unclear whether Thomas was married when he immigrated. Another brother immigrated as well, maybe 10-years later.
I know very little about Michael or Thomas, but ship records do show a Palatine ship with a "Johan Thomas Shon" aboard. He was 38-years old. The ship came to port in Philadelphia, PA.
Thanks so much!
Michelle :D
Dank so viel!

Oh, ok. It's so hard to do this when you don't speak or understand German! Is there a forum on this site for genealogy? I'm actually just trying to do an anscestoral surname search c1700s for Berlin.

I'm sorry to tell you that this site only deals with the explanation of surname meanings, not with genealogy. I would advise you to contact an appropriate forum such as  genealogy.net or any other containing the term ahnenforschung for your enquiry.
Greetings

It's very simple to change the language at the forum I suggested to you:
At the top of the page you'll see a German flag and the phrase "Sprache ändern" (= change language) so, just click on the flag and choose "English". Then you'll have to register first and follow the instructions - it's a piece of cake. Plus, you can write your posting in English, too.

I did find a forum linked to this site, but I have no idea how I did it! (-:
I will try again. I had a lot of difficulty registering, so I wrote an e-mail to the webmaster. I see that I have the English iption for my profile page, but I don't see that option for this forum.

Since this forum has experts in surname meanings, what are your thoughts on the name Dedrie or Dedric? It is difficult to decipher the handwriting in an old bible. This anscestor's name was something like these spellings. Is there a particular meaning associated with this name? Or region it may be associated with? One member thought that it could have been "Germanized" long ago, and I have found many similar spellings such as Dederich, Dedriech, and of course Detriech. Any ideas would be welcomed! This time period would have been around 1695? Very early 1700s.

Hallo Diogenes,
Danke
